Marketing Myopia.

I keep imploring you to cast where the fish are, but I awaken today on a national holiday to find that all the retailers have closed. Clearly, my work here is far from done. Or am I missing something?

Perhaps you're not aware that for most retail employees, Xmas Day is one of the few days that they are actually able to spend time with their families and friends in the holiday season.

The holiday season is not at all fun when you work in a shop. You have to come in to work earlier, stay later, and put up with large crowds of rude, stressed out holiday shoppers. Making retail employees work Xmas day on top of everything else they have to put up with in November and December would be more than a little inhumane.
