The First and Last Word On Online Communities.

"An online community is no substitute for real-world interactions. In fact, the most successful online communities are the ones that throw parties, sponsor events, host get-togethers -- help members meet one another face-to-face in the real world."

Not my words but those of Craig Newmark, founder, Craigslist interviewed by Fast Company.

In November 2000.

Now can we all move on.

John - have I told you recently how much I love your style!!!?

It always amazes me how every new thing has to be THE new thing that REPLACES all other things (including the basic human behaviour it was supposed to facilitate)! When will our species realize that there are no "silver bullets" - the magic is getting it all to work together in a way that helps us achieve our goals - and the answer is usually different for different situations.

There, I'm done!

"An online community is no substitute for real-world interactions."

This is so absolutely true. Our daily lives have been overcome by online interactions which some call their "friends"...but these are really not friends until you have interacted with them socially and face-to-face. A true "friend" has a connection to - and with - you which cannot be created and/or gauged by online interaction. Online interaction and socializing is great and fun to an extent but should not ever replace the 'real deal.'
